Tidal
Sails is a Norwegian company developing and constructing energy
plants generating electricity from ocean currents and tidal
streams. Aluminum sail profiles attached to wires sail with the
current at an angle, capturing energy and converting it into
clean electricity. Linearly moving sails have great extraction
efficiency, thus dramatically reducing the cost of the
electricity generation. Tidal Sail’s technology may be used in
different settings and is protected by several patents
worldwide.
Tidal Sails was established in 2004 based on an idea by Are
Børgesen, a commercial airline pilot. With his extensive
background in sailing, diving, and skiing, the idea developed
during a regatta, sailing with the wind from behind against the
current. What if the yacht was upside down with the spinnaker
(sail) under water catching the current? Lots of energy could be
generated.
